Keeping Your Home Dry With a Dehumidifier

Although the rainy season doesn’t really ramp up until mid-summer in this part of Florida, spring is always a good time to start thinking about a dehumidifier. As the temperature begins to climb and humidity starts to tick up, mold growth becomes a likely problem without the right dehumidifier. Not only that, but a humid home can be an uncomfortable home, and moisture can cause thousands of dollars of damage if allowed to invade the house. So read on to discover how to choose the right dehumidifier for the rainy season.

What Does a Dehumidifier Do and How Does It Prevent Mold?

As the name suggests, a dehumidifier works to remove humidity from the air. Although air conditioners also help remove humidity from the home, it’s often not enough to keep the home comfortable and mold-free. A dehumidifier works by pulling in warm, humid air from inside the home to the unit. In the unit, the warm air is pulled over cooled coils by a fan. Those coils trap the moisture in the warm air to the coils, effectively removing the water from the air. That water then drains off the coils and into a storage tank.

After this process takes place, the dehumidified air is then blown back into the home. And since mold needs moisture to grow, the process makes it nearly impossible for mold to grow in the home unless it has another source of moisture. The trick is getting a dehumidifier that will work for the entire house or area. To do this, one needs to know about the two kinds of dehumidifiers.

Two Main Kinds of Dehumidifiers

dehumidifiersDehumidifiers are divided into two main categories: whole-home and portable. Whole-home dehumidifiers tend to be more energy-efficient than portable ones. They also require professional installation. There are also different sizes of whole-home dehumidifiers, and getting the wrong size can cause problems in the home.

Portable dehumidifiers are considered supplemental because they’re usually only suitable for small spaces. Those who just need to give their AC a little help often opt for a portable dehumidifier since they don’t actually need a whole-home one.

Which Dehumidifier Is the Right Choice?

Deciding which dehumidifier is the right one takes just a little bit of forethought. The first thing to consider would be how many total square feet one is trying to dehumidify. Plus, it’s good to estimate how many pints of moisture one desires to remove from the air. For those living in homes that are constantly sticky and humid, a whole-home dehumidifier is best.

A portable dehumidifier is ideal for those renting or living in a smaller space where a whole-home unit would be overkill. Obviously, renters would have to get permission from their landlord to install anything, but getting a portable dehumidifier is a good alternative. Those living in small apartments often find that a portable unit works fine for them since it’s a relatively small space. Of course, it’s always a good idea to talk to a trained HVAC professional about dehumidifier options before making a final decision.
